The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage.

Our NSS volunteers have fostered a wide range of initiatives, including: Health camps and awareness programs Environmental conservation projects Rural development projects Blood donation drives Skill development workshops etc.

April Cool Day

NSS volunteers celebrated April 1 st as “April Cool Day” thereby giving a green twist to the celebrations. As part of celebration, volunteers planted saplings and water pots for birds were also arranged. The Autism Sensory Park at our College were funded with one-month supply of food for the pigeons and love birds in it, ensuring the well-being and care of these beloved feathered friends. All NSS volunteers participated actively in the programme.

Homoeopathic Medical Camp organised by NSS conducted on May 2024

The NSS unit of SVRHMC in collaboration with the Vayojeevanam Project (Geriatric OPD) organised a free medical camp for residents of old age homes at Satyanweshana Charitable Society, Peyad, Karunalayam Charitable Trust, Amaravila and Divine Mercy Old age home, Kattakada from May 15 to 31, 2024. Led by Dr.Krishna Kumar.M (NSS Program Officer), Dr.Leeba Mary Joshua (Vayojeevanam Project In-Charge) and Dr.Fathimathul Thasneem(RMO), a team of 25 NSS volunteers provided medical care to approximately 150 stakeholders. The camp offered free blood sugar and blood pressure tests, yoga sessions, and medicines with some patients referred for further complimentary treatment at SVRHMC. The dedication of the NSS volunteers was instrumental in the camp’s success, demonstrating their commitment to community service.

Environment Day

To Commemorate Environment day, our College organized a series of eco-friendly initiatives. We planned new seeds and saplings in the college garden, and distributed seeds provided by Krishi Bhavan among staff and students, aiming to harvest by Onam. Additionally , a week-long drive was conducted to eradicate plastic waste from the college premises, with volunteers divided into groups to collect and remove plastic waste material from assigned locations between 3.30 pm and 5.oo pm daily.

Yoga day

On June 18 th , 2024, Smt.Uma Kalyani, a renowned Yoga Trainer and Dietician, led a engaging Yoga Session for the NSS volunteers on behalf of international Yoga Day. She emphasized the significance of incorporating yoga into daily life for achieving a peaceful and healthy lifestyle. Through demonstrations and guided practice, she taught the volunteers key yoga asanas that can enhance concentration and promote a stress-free life. The session empowered the volunteers with valuable techniques for long-term well-being.
